Dance NOW! returns to Aventura Arts & Cultural Center to present this politically charged ballet. Bridges speaks to the pressures we face as humans, seeking uniqueness and definition, membership to community. Yet these descriptors divide. Many across the planet face sudden unexpected and radical shifts in their personal paradigms including political upheaval, racism, war, climate tragedy, personal identity changes and economic distress which may bring them to flee their homes, seeking shelter, support, amnesty, economic opportunity and freedom. Bridges urges us to find common ground, while not only accepting, but also celebrating our differences. Conceived in 2016 and premiered in 2017 and performed in the US, Mexico and Italy, it references a global atmosphere of separatism, hate, prejudice and misunderstanding fueled by the international global migration crisis, the challenges to equal rights based on gender, ethnicity, race or identity, and the need to rectify biases and face the challenges of living as one world.
Bridges has become an anthem for Dance NOW!, a message that “…yearns to be seen and heard” -Diana Dunbar, the Wonderful World of Dance, March 20, 2017.
“Bridges” includes choreography by Dance NOW!’s artistic Directors Hannah Baumgarten (US) and Diego Salterini (ITALY), with stunning original video art from Francisco Moraga Escalona (CHILE) and costumes from Renato Armijo of Chernaya Bridal House (PERU), with lighting from Bruce F. Brown (US) and a compelling musical score, alongside the brilliant poem, “Home” by Warsan Shire (UK/SOMALIA). The work was conceived to bring cultures, languages and countries together, bridging the boundaries of nations through the language of dance.
The evening of dance will also include the world premiere of Baumgarten’s 1933, a cautionary tale set in Germany as Hitler was taking control, it is about the role of artists under Facism and the risks they take to protect their communities, plus audience favorites from the company’s 26 years of entertaining and inspiring works including Salterini’s compelling duet Strings of Goodbye, and West Coast choreographer Tandy Beal’s Forest Dreams, as part of DNM’s Masterpiece in Motion Series.
