Challenging political and social moments often lead to creative artistic responses. With “Blue Pencil,” Dance NOW! Miami and Dança em Diálogos tackle the issues of authoritarianism and repression head-on. The politically charged ballet takes its title from Portugal’s “Blue Pencil” censorship under the Salazar dictatorship from 1933 to 1974. The world premiere, danced by a blended cast from both companies, will highlight the power of the arts to resist illegitimate authority with stories of resilience and hope from across the globe and in different decades. The program will also include a video presentation from Ded and an excerpt of “Gli Altri/The Others” from Dance NOW!.
