DANCE NOW! TRAVELS TO PORTUGAL TO HEADLINE IN RHI FESTIVAL JUNE 24, 2021
Dance NOW! brings their 2020/21 season to a rousing close when they travel to Cascais, Portugal to perform in the RHI Festival Thursday, June 24 at 8:00 pm, at Casino Estoril, with their newest work, the Jewish-themed “Anusim ,what is hidden is never lost,” in a joint performance with Lisbon-based company, Dança Em Diálogós.
"Anusim” builds on a pivotal previous work for DNM, "Odisea" by Carolyn Dorfman from 2015, and was created as part of a collaboration between both troupes. It delves into themes of culture annihilation, assimilation and forced diaspora inspired by the 1497 Decree of King Manuel I of Portugal requiring all Jews to be baptized as "New Christians" but allowing them to practice their own religion in secret.
“Anusim” is inspired by historical events yet the message resonates loudly in a world where globalization often becomes homogenization, cultural appropriation and assimilation, tragic losses for the human race. It includes an original score from long-time DNM collaborator Federico Bonacossa and vocals from well-known South Florida based Sephardic singer Susana Behar.
If you missed Program I: “This Moment, Here” Live-Streamed from the North Beach Bandshell - you can still purchase your ticket for $10 to see a recording of the event.
