Miami Dance Futures’ Annual Concert, A Life in Dance, stands as a cornerstone event of the Cultural Passport program. This year’s dance performance will feature Night Spell, from choreographer Doris Humphrey, created in 1951. The iconic modern dance masterwork explores psychological dream states, nocturnal anxiety and the subconscious, through symbolic movement. Lewis, whose distinguished career as a choreographer and educator spans over six decades will discuss the process of bringing a historical work of dance to life. Also on the program will be a curated selection of works from the vast and varied repertory of Dr. Daniel Lewis, one of Miami’s treasures, as well as other leading South Florida choreographers.
The performance will showcase Dr. Lewis’s profound influence on modern dance and his mastery of the Limón technique. Audiences will experience a dynamic performance that illustrates the evolution of his artistic vision, encompassing both contemporary and classic modern dance styles. The concert celebrates the ageless spirit of dance and the enduring impact of Dr. Lewis’s creative contributions, offering a narrative that bridges generations and genres through expressive movement, musicality, and emotional depth.
A Question and Answer session between each piece will enhance the students’ experience, providing a window into the history and development of the Limón style, the creative process in dance and understanding cross curricular connections with language arts, social studies/history, health and wellness, athletics and physical expression.
